Ethics has framed many of my questions, many of which policy and economics have answered. “Do not be proud of wealth and power, because it is just a passing shadow.” The line was inscribed on an 1892 photograph of fourteen half-clothed young female labourers employed by my great-great-great-grandfather, Salamat Rai. His story, from Burmese railway contracts to the devastation of Partition, first drew me to philosophy, policy, and economics. That image revealed the hidden cost of prosperity and became the foundation of my academic curiosity.
